MORMLE CHASE

How Scripture Chase works

A live scripture chase for your class. You read a key phrase, students race to find the passage on their phones, and the scoreboard shows who was quickest.

What you need

  • A computer or tablet for you. It shows the key phrases and the answers, so keep it to yourself unless you want students to see the answer.
  • Optional: a TV or projector for the scoreboard (the TV screen).
  • Students' phones, tablets or laptops with a browser. They need no account, only a code and a nickname.

Running a game, step by step

  1. Open the dashboard and choose the rules: the scriptures in play (or pick single passages), the language of the key phrases, how points work, the time for each phrase, the number of phrases and a hint. Then press Create room.
  2. Students join. They open this site, type the 5-digit code shown at the top of your dashboard and a nickname. If you use the TV screen they can scan its QR code instead. Their names appear in the lobby, and the × next to a name removes that student.
  3. Press Start. The key phrase appears on your screen (and on the TV). Read it aloud while students race to find the passage and tap it. The counter shows how many have answered.
  4. The round ends when the time runs out, when everybody connected has answered, or when you press End round now.
  5. The answer and the leaderboard appear. Press Next phrase to continue. Skip swaps the phrase for a different one before you start it.
  6. To finish, press End game for the final scoreboard. Play again keeps the room and the students and sets all scores back to zero.

Changing things during the game

Press Settings at any time to change the scriptures, passages, time, number of phrases, hint and other options. You keep the same code and the same students. If a round is running, the changes wait for the next round.

How points are counted (speed, podium or first wins) cannot change once the game has started, so everybody plays by the same rules. Play again unlocks it.

The TV screen

  1. On the dashboard press TV screen. A new window opens.
  2. Drag that window to the TV or projector and double-click it for full screen. You can also open the same address on the TV itself: it asks for the room code.
  3. Before the game it shows the join address, the code and a QR code that students scan with their camera. During a round it shows the key phrase, the countdown, the hint and the scoreboard. After each round it shows the answer first, then the scoreboard, with the points won and the students moving up and down.

The TV only displays. You control everything from the dashboard. The dashboard also shows the answer during the round, so do not put the dashboard on the TV.

The report

  • After every round the dashboard shows how each student did: right, wrong or no answer, the time, whether they answered after the hint, and the points.
  • Spreadsheet (CSV) downloads a file for Excel or Google Sheets with a summary, a table by student (with a column for every round), a table by passage and a list of every answer.
  • Printable report opens a clean page you can print or save as a PDF. It shows the summary, the students and the passages. The summary lists the passages the class found hardest, so you know what to review next time.
  • The report covers all rounds played so far and is available during the game. Download it before you close the room or press Play again: it is deleted with the room and cannot be recovered afterwards. The dashboard warns you if you forget.

What students do

  1. Open the site (or scan the QR code), type the code and a nickname, and press Join.
  2. Wait for the teacher to start.
  3. When a round starts, find the passage that matches the phrase. The buttons are in scripture order: scroll up and down, and swipe left and right (or tap the tabs) to switch between the Old Testament, New Testament, Book of Mormon and Doctrine and Covenants.
  4. Tap one button. Be quick: with speed scoring, a faster answer is worth more. Unless retries are allowed, the answer is locked in.
  5. When the round ends, students see if they were right, their points and their place.

If a phone locks or loses its connection, the page reconnects by itself and keeps the score. Two students cannot use the same nickname in one room.

How points work

  • Speed: everyone who is right scores, from 1000 points for an instant answer down to 500 at the end of the time.
  • Podium: the first three right answers score 3, 2 and 1 points.
  • First wins: only the first right answer scores (1 point) and the round ends right away, like the classroom game.
  • Allow another try: a wrong tap is shown at once and the student can tap another passage.
  • Wrong answers lose points: 250 points with speed scoring, otherwise 1 point. A score never goes below zero.
  • Show the phrase on students' screens: useful for a noisy room or a class that meets online.
  • Hint: after the share of the time you choose, the TV shows which scripture the passage is in, and that tab pulses on the students' phones.

Good to know

  • You can refresh or close the dashboard: open it again in the same browser and you are back in your room. New room closes the room.
  • A room is deleted 4 hours after your last action. Only nicknames and scores are kept, and only until then.
  • A dimmed name means that student's phone is offline right now.
